Imagine standing in a lush herbal garden on the banks of the Periyar River, surrounded by over 1,000 plant species, some of which are rare and nearly impossible to find anywhere else in the world. Your guide points to a small leafy plant and explains exactly how it has been used in Ayurvedic wellness for thousands of years. You lean in, touch the leaf, breathe in its earthy fragrance, and something shifts. This is not a classroom. This is Ayurveda alive.
That experience, and so many more like it, is at the heart of what Kerala Ayurveda USA's India Immersion Program offers. From August 31 through September 13, 2026, a group of Kerala Ayurveda students, practitioners, and curious wellness seekers will travel to the birthplace of Ayurveda to learn, explore, and experience this profound system of healing in its most authentic form.

Why Kerala? Understanding Ayurveda in Its Native Land
Kerala, located in southwestern India, is often called the cradle of Ayurveda. This coastal state, flanked by the Western Ghats to the east and the Arabian Sea to the west, has preserved Ayurvedic knowledge and practice in its purest form for thousands of years. While Ayurveda is practiced throughout India and around the world, Kerala holds a unique lineage. The principles, the plants, the therapies, and the culture are inseparable here.
Kerala Ayurveda Limited (KAL) was born right here in 1945, established as an apothecary on the Periyar River by the renowned Ayurveda Acharya (teacher), the late KGK Panicker. What began as a small apothecary has grown into a full spectrum Ayurvedic institution spanning academies, clinics, hospitals, herbal research gardens, and wellness centers that serve the health of 70,000 people per year.
When you travel to Kerala with Kerala Ayurveda USA, you are not visiting as a tourist. You are stepping directly into that living heritage.

Your Journey: A Day by Day Look at What You Will Experience
Cochin: Where Learning Meets Culture
The program begins at Kerala Ayurveda's Health Village in Cochin (Kochi), a serene campus on the banks of the Periyar River where they say each guest is a king. For the first several days, participants are immersed in educational programming that goes far beyond what any textbook can offer.
Here is a glimpse of what unfolds during your time in Cochin:
-
Kerala Culture and History: An evening talk on the local legends, customs, and culture of Ayurveda's birthplace gives meaningful context to everything you are about to experience.
-
Ayurveda in India: Discover firsthand how Ayurveda is woven into the daily fabric of Kerala life, and how it differs in practice from what you may have learned or experienced in the United States.
-
Health Consultation Camps: One of the most profound aspects of Ayurvedic philosophy is seva (selfless service). Kerala Ayurveda sponsors a home for the elderly and an orphanage, and program participants are invited to volunteer at consultation camps at both locations, working alongside experienced Ayurvedic practitioners as they serve the community.
-
Special Therapies Demonstration: Witness firsthand some of the more specialized Ayurvedic therapies available only in India, including Raktamoksha (bloodletting) and Agnikarma (cauterization), as well as the art of Ayurvedic eyeliner preparation.
-
KAL Herbal Garden Tour: Walk through the herbal garden home to over 1,000 plant species. Touch, smell, and observe the herbs that form the backbone of so many beloved Kerala Ayurveda formulations.
-
Manufacturing Factory Tour: Watch how Ayurvedic herbal preparations are produced at scale, from liquid formulas and tablets to ointments and powders, all following the highest standards of Ayurvedic production.
The city of Cochin itself adds to the richness of the experience. Fort Kochi, with its iconic Chinese fishing nets, colonial era architecture, and vibrant coastal energy, is a highlight that stays with travelers long after they return home. Past participants have made friendships that last a lifetime, have returned on multiple trips, enjoyed the cuisine, soak in sounds, smells and sights of India
Athirappily Falls: Reconnecting with Nature
After your days in Cochin, the group travels into the lush wilderness of the Kerala rainforest to spend two nights near the breathtaking Athirappily Falls. Staying at a serene cliffside resort, participants wake to the sound of rushing water and spend their days on nature hikes, wildlife viewing, and quiet reflection.
Ayurveda teaches us that connection with the natural world is not optional. It is essential. Prakriti (nature) is the foundation upon which all of Ayurveda rests. Time in this kind of environment is not just beautiful. It is restorative in the deepest sense.
Alappuzha: Life on the Backwaters
Two nights in Alappuzha place you in one of Kerala's most iconic landscapes, perfectly nestled between the Arabian Sea and the tranquil backwaters. Heritage and modern villas set among lagoons and canals offer views of golden sunsets over the Arabian Sea and quiet mornings reflected in still water.
Here, you might spot dolphins at dusk, watch kingfishers dive for their catch, or simply sit with the rhythm of country boats gliding through the canals as toddy tappers climb coconut palms overhead. Nature walks, a houseboat excursion, and cultural activities round out these restful days.
This is Ayurveda in its most elemental form. Slowing down. Observing nature. Breathing deeply.
Ayurvedagram: Your Personalized Wellness Retreat
The journey concludes with five nights at Ayurvedagram, one of the Top Five Ayurvedic Health Resorts in India, located near Bangalore and renowned for authentic Ayurvedic rejuvenation programs. Ayurvedagram will welcome you home, where you feel like you belong or were meant to be. This is not your typical spa, but you will stay in a Kerala heritage cabin, brought piece by piece to just outside Bangalore from Kerala. The vibe is peaceful and serene, the climate is as delicious as the food. The Ayurveda therapists will treat you like royalty and you can indulge in all that Ayurvedagram has to offer while your healing retreat begins. Many extend their stay to participate in a full Panchkarma experience.
Here, every participant receives a personalized wellness program that includes:
-
An Ayurvedic consultation with a trained practitioner
-
Two Ayurvedic therapies per day at the Panchakarma (purification and rejuvenation) center
-
Herbal formulations and individualized lifestyle guidance
-
Daily Yoga, Pranayama (breathwork), Dhyana (meditation), and cooking classes.
-
Sunrise Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar) sessions in the outdoor garden
The grounds of Ayurvedagram are home to hundreds of medicinal plants, and Vaidya Jayarajan Kodikannath, your trip leader, will personally lead herbal garden walks to share the depth of his knowledge. A visit to a local Hindu temple, local shopping for traditional dress, and a celebratory India Cultural Night featuring traditional Kerala dance bring the experience to a joyful and memorable close.
Your Trip Leader: Vaidya Jayarajan Kodikannath
No trip of this nature would be complete without an exceptional guide. Vaidya Jayarajan Kodikannath, BSc, BAMS, known warmly as Dr. J, serves as the CEO, Chief Ayurvedic Consultant, and Academy Director of Kerala Ayurveda USA. A Kerala native from a family rooted in Ayurvedic tradition, he is deeply versed in the root texts of Ayurveda, the Vedas, and brings both clinical mastery and personal storytelling to every moment of the journey. Former President of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association, he has dedicated his career to both serving communities and elevating Ayurvedic education worldwide.
Having Dr. J lead this immersion is, without question, an extraordinary opportunity to learn directly from one of the most respected voices in Ayurveda today. Hear the stories from Dr J and learn how Ayurveda has been lived in India for generations, and how Kerala Ayurveda is bringing it back through each person they touch.
Who Is This Program For?
One of the most welcoming aspects of this program is that no prior knowledge of Ayurveda is required. Whether you are a curious beginner, a current Kerala Ayurveda student, or a practicing Ayurvedic professional, this journey offers layers of learning and experience for every level.
Ayurvedic students and professionals are also eligible to earn course credit toward Kerala Ayurveda programs and NAMA PACE (National Ayurvedic Medical Association Professional and Continuing Education) credits through participation.
